George W. Bush launched two of the longest, most expensive, most deadly wars in American history on fabricated intelligence and institutional cowardice. The Iraq War — built on the WMD lie — killed on the order of half a million people (excess-mortality studies range from ~200,000 documented violent deaths to ~500,000+ total excess), displaced millions, destroyed a functioning if brutal state, and opened the vacuum that spawned ISIS.

He authorized a global torture program — waterboarding, stress positions, rendition to deniable black sites — illegal under international law and approved at cabinet level. He built the NSA bulk-collection apparatus that shredded the Fourth Amendment. Afghanistan's initial premise was defensible; the two-decade occupation that followed enriched contractors and warlords and evaporated within weeks of withdrawal. And Katrina drowned a city while his government watched.
